Military training

I have some friends who seem to think it is fun and a good way to spend their time when they are being pushed to the extreme by doing strenuous military style activities. One friend is a petite girl who is so lovely and gentle, however she spends a night a week in a field doing more push ups than I could only ever dream of, being screamed at by authoritarian figures and doing obstacle courses. Now I get that this sort of thing is good exercise however so is Pilates and going for a long walk in the country, both of which I will promise you are more enjoyable than working out until you cry and until your legs cave from under you. Insanity!

Extreme ironing

Have you ever heard of extreme ironing? There is a group of people who actually see ironing in extreme situations as a “sport” and therefore take an iron, ironing board and a pile of laundry into strange situations and see if they can actually iron whilst riding bikes, climbing up mountains, kayaking, playing rugby and doing other strange and wonderful things. Now correct me if i’m wrong, but surely the whole point of ironing is to get your clothes perfectly un-creased and keep them in a perfectly clean state for wearing. I doubt any of these extreme situations would do anything for the creases or help out with the workload in the house!

Bike riding

When considering activities to do to keep fit, my first thoughts go to playing sports or running and then to riding a bike. Bike rides are great for keeping fit and also seeing the countryside if you go off road. Many a walking trail can also be done on a bike and there are loads of cycle trails up and down the country where you can enjoy a fun day out. Make a day of a bike ride with your family and friends and pack a picnic, go to a scenic point of interest and enjoy the freedom being on a bike gives you!

Christmas Activities

I’m just thinking about activities I can do with my family when we’re all cooped up in the house on Christmas evening. It’s never a good time when you’ve got long lost relatives sitting in the corner of the room and you’re trying to make small talk so why not get some activities on the go? Try Christmas favourites including games such as charades, trivial pursuit, monopoly, hungry hippos, frustration, twister, operation, cluedo or mousetrap. Or if you want to step into this century have a go on wii games or the new x box connect which has no controls but a camera motion sensor.

Outdoor walking

On a Sunday afternoon there’s nothing better than a long walk in the country which ends with a massive Sunday pub lunch! A carvery dinner or a massive ploughman’s lunch are my favourites. My family and I often take the dog on a walk in the Derbyshire dales and navigate our way along the outdoor trails, go throw rocks into pools of water, climb trees, have picnics (although I must admit that is more of a summer activity!!) and go and see historical sites and natural points of interest such as the Goyt Valley or the seven sisters. Outdoor walking is definitely a good way to spend your leisure time.
